What If I Told You?

Sharing-A-SecretWhat if I told you the secret to creating a powerful marketing hook? You’d probably be very interested. Everyone wants to know how to effectively get people’s attention. What if I told you the secret is much easier than you might think? You’d love to know a shortcut to great marketing, right? What if I told you that the secret is using the phrase, “What if I told you?”

Whenever you combine the question, “What if I told you?” with a contrarian statement, you’re almost guaranteed to attract people’s interest. For example, ESPN uses this marketing tactic to promote all of their sports documentaries called “30 for 30.” Watch this video and notice how they entice viewers by using the “What if” question:

Recently, I’ve helped clients use the power of “What if” questions in effective ways:

  • What if I told you there is only one type of leader really worth following?
  • What if I told you the woman you become hinges upon the women who have gone before you?
  • What if I told you having faith in God creates weird emotions atheists never feel?

Hearing these questions naturally makes you interested to know more. That’s the goal of a marketing hook. Make people curious. Make them wonder. Make them fascinated. What if I told you using this secret could revolutionize your marketing?

The Business of Being an Author

January 12, 2026 Posted by Rob Eagar No Comments

Most authors who struggle to sell books don’t have a writing problem. They have a business problem. That statement can make some writers uncomfortable—especially if you’re someone who is talented. You’ve spent years honing your craft, attending workshops, polishing prose, and chasing the elusive ideal of “great writing.” And yet, when the book launches, sales stall.

Most authors who struggle to sell books don’t have a writing problem. They have a business problem. Here's the quiet truth...
